American Idol Flashback: Top 20

Friday, December 26th, 2008

Today is Chris Daughtry’s birthday and he turns 29 years old! Happy Birthday Chris!!
(I would not want my birthday to be the day after Christmas…just sayin’)

In honor of Chris’ birthday, I’m gonna do something I haven’t done in almost a year (!!): an American Idol Flashback. You know you’re excited! If you didn’t either overtly or secretly love American Idol, you probably would be here right now.

So here it goes, we left off at the Top 20. And of course you know they split up the guys and girls, so this is now the top 10 guys.

Chris went last and performed Fuel’s “Hemorrhage (In My Hands)” which was by far one of his best performances. Here’s the full video with the judges comments:

After this performance, and seeing all the judges really give him a lot of praise, I knew 100% for sure that he was going to make it to the top few people. This is definitely one of my favorite of Chris’ performances. I love this song and he did such an amazing job with it, and of course, what a voice he has!!

I almost died after I heard him sing that song. I immediately found in online and listened to it over and over until the next week. That was back in the days when I was absolutely obsessed with American Idol. I still love that show but it’s just not as good as it used to be.
The new season starts in a couple weeks and they’re making a lot of changes, so maybe this year we’ll get back to how good it used to be. I can only hope!

American Idol Flashback: Top 24

Monday, December 31st, 2007

Here we go again. Time for another American Idol Flashback people. The new season is going to starting a few weeks. It’s not going to be as good as previous seasons but hopefully it won’t get any worse than last season (is that even possible?).

So, Chris made it through the Hollywood rounds and into the Top 24. Click HERE to see the video of Chris hearing the good news from the judges.

OK, onto the Top 24; when the show really begins. Well, actually it’s the Top 12 guys and the Top 12 girls, because as you know they split them up. I personally think it is ridiculous that they split them up like that because talent has nothing to do with gender. Why should 6 girls make it to the Top 12 if 3 of them are crappy singers and 9 of the guys are good? You know what I mean? That’s how people like Mikalah Gordon and Lindsay Cardinale make it and then people like David Brown don’t make it and Nikko Smith only makes it because some idiot drops out. Season 4 anyone? Do you see what I’m saying here?
Ok, I know…moving on.
So, Chris sang Bon Jovi’s “Dead or Alive” which is an amazing song and such a great choice for him. Here’s the full video:

I just loved that performance! It’s one of my favorites. I remember the night it was on I wasn’t home so I had to tape it. And my friend was watching it and sent me a text freaking out that Chris was singing Bon Jovi. We were ridiculously obsessed with American Idol at the time. Ahh those were the good old days.

In case you forgot, the other 11 guys were: Patrick Hall, David Radford, Bucky Covington, William Makar, Jose Penala, Kevin Covais, Gedeon McKinney, Elliott Yamin, Bobby Bennett, Ace Young and Taylor Hicks.

And the 12 girls were: Mandisa Hundley, Kellie Pickler, Becky O’Donohue, Ayla Brown, Paris Bennett, Stevie Scott, Brenna Gethers, Heather Cox, Melissa McGhee, Lisa Tucker, Kinnik Sky and Katharine McPhee.

Two guys and two girls have to go home. Who will go? Who will stay? Until next time…

American Idol Flashback: Hollywood Week

Sunday, November 25th, 2007

It’s that time again! Time for another American Idol Flashback… and I know you’re as excited as I am. I need to do this to remind me of when American Idol used to be good.

OK, we already reviewed Chris’ audition so it’s time to move onto Hollywood week! Personally, Hollywood week is one of my favorite episodes of the year. In my opinion they should cut out a week of crappy auditions and add a week to show extra footage from Hollywood week, but who am I to question the might empire of American Idol?

Here’s the video of Chris singing ‘The First Cut is the Deepest’. Clearly it’s not perfect but I love his performance! His voice is just amazing and I love how he puts his own twist on everything he sings. In American Idol vernacular he “makes it his own”.

And then this is the video of Chris’ group’s performance of ‘Emotions’ with Ace Young and some other guy named Bobby. I was never a fan of Ace Young. I know he was supposed to be the hottie of the year but he was a crappy singer and that annoyed me. He did have excellent hair though.
Anyways, again, I just love Chris’ voice! And only he could pull off a rock version of ‘Emotions’ :)

Hollywood week was when I realized that Chris was really gonna make it to the final few people. Because even though he had to sing songs that weren’t his style, he still sounded amazing and stood out compared to all the other people in the competition. Which is good because we all know American Idol pulls out some very random themes as the weeks go by. So even if the theme was, I don’t know, 70’s dance music or whatever ridiculous theme they come up with, at least we now knew that Chris could pull it off.

I’ve gotta go see if I can find some old AI tapes to re-watch. This is all bringing back memories *sigh*

American Idol Flashback: The Audition

Wednesday, October 24th, 2007

OK, so I think it’s time to bust out the old American Idol footage and do some Chris Daughtry AI flashbacks. It was just a matter of time before this day came.

So, clearly, we should start with his audition. I need to stick my own Chris Daughtry fan testimonial in here:

I have been a little, *cough* OK extremely obsessed with American Idol every year, whether I wanted to be or not. Especially after Season 4 when I fell in love with Constantine Maroulis (but that’s a completely different story). So I was waiting with bated breath for Season 5 to start.

When the commercials started coming on for the Season 5 premiere in January, I was already paying close attention. Now, if you will recall, they played part of Chris’ audition in many of the commercials. From the second I saw/heard him on the commercials, I knew he would be my pick for the season (you gotta love the rockers, hence Constantine… again, another story for another day)

Here’s the video of his audition:

I loved his audition, I loved (and still love) his kind of scruffy rocker voice and his whole image, LOVED the song he chose. Needless to say, I was looking forward to seeing how far he would go in the competition.

Now, I’m sure I was yelling at the screen at the time, but I completely forgot that Simon said no! I can’t believe that! In retrospect, obviously that was a bad choice and I’m sure Simon regrets that. BUT, in his defense (kind of) you could tell that he was very nervous, especially seeing how he is now. So I suppose I can understand his point…even though he was wrong. It’s kind of scary when Paula makes the most sense out of any of the judges.

And until I could remember his name, I always referred to him as the bald guy with the crying wife. Gotta love that they sucked people in right away with his heart-warming story.

So, that’s my tale. I’ve loved Chris Daughtry since the moment I saw the clip of his audition on the preview commercials. True story…pathetic, but true.
